Individualized Substance Abuse Counseling

From when you first begin treatment to your last day in rehab, you’ll meet with one of our Milwaukee substance abuse counselors on a regular basis. Your one-on-one counseling sessions are an opportunity to discover, explore, and heal the root causes of your addiction. They’re also a chance to develop healthier coping mechanisms, discuss personal challenges, and reflect on your progress in recovery.

Our experienced clinical team approaches treatment differently with each client, so that everyone who comes through our program has access to substance abuse treatment that they’re comfortable with. At Roots Recovery, we understand that different people experience addiction in different ways — we provide counseling with this in mind.

Group and Family Counseling

While you’re in recovery, we emphasize helping you develop strong support networks — both with peers in addiction rehab and with your loved ones. During group therapy, our clients work with an addiction counselor, as well as their peers, to develop positive thought patterns, learn effective skills for sobriety, discover new perspectives, and form supportive relationships with those in similar situations.

We also offer family counseling with clients and their loved ones. Working with one of our experienced therapists, we discuss how each member of the family has been affected by addiction, and explore what each person needs from the others in order to heal.

Life Skills

Addiction can rob you of a life that’s considered normal. Our goal in helping you succeed in your recovery is to help you develop the tools to achieve the life you deserve, no matter how basic. Between therapy and sober living, many clients learn important practical skills, including cooking and cleaning, laundry, finding and holding a job, and more.

The goal is to ensure that each client who moves through our continuum is equipped to stay focused, even when treatment isn’t as frequent. During each stage of recovery, we spend time working with clients on the like skills they’ll need in order to manage the rest of their lives without the use of drugs or alcohol, including:

  • Healthy coping mechanisms
  • Relapse prevention techniques and strategies
  • How to have fun while sober
  • How to set and achieve goals
  • Practicing healthy eating, sleep, and exercise habits
  • Setting healthy boundaries
  • Developing professional skills
  • How to be of service to others in recovery

12-Step Programming

At Roots Recovery, we introduce our clients to the 12 Steps and help place them into 12-Step meetings, both with their housemates and with community members. We encourage our clients to actively participate in positive, helpful, and solution-driven 12-Step groups. We also help our clients find sponsors by connecting them with those we’ve worked with in the past who have maintained their recovery. Clients attend meetings an average of 5 days a week, and 12-Step principles are reinforced during Roots Recovery addiction treatment programs.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Due to the destructive nature of drug and alcohol abuse, it’s not uncommon for the disease of addiction to be accompanied by a mental health condition. Commonly referred to as a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder, both conditions usually feed into one another and share similar symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose and treat them effectively.

Our experienced addiction clinicians and substance abuse counselors at Roots Recovery are skilled in detecting and constructing treatment plans for co-occurring disorders, such as depression and anxiety accompanied by addiction. We believe that mental health conditions and addiction need to be treated simultaneously for our clients to truly begin to heal and continue onto a life of lasting recovery.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

We embrace Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as a fundamental component of our comprehensive approach to overcoming addiction. MAT combines proven medications with personalized counseling and behavioral therapies to address substance use disorders effectively, facilitating a more manageable and supportive recovery journey. This integrated treatment model is tailored to meet the individual needs of our clients, ensuring they receive the compassionate care and expert guidance necessary to navigate the challenges of recovery. By leveraging MAT, we enhance our clients’ ability to engage fully in our programs, from individual and group counseling to life skills development, fostering a solid foundation for a sober, healthy life.

Incorporating MAT into the fabric of our services at Roots Recovery underscores our commitment to evidence-based therapies that heal the mind, body, and spirit. It reflects our holistic philosophy that recovery is a multidimensional process, requiring attention to the physical aspects of addiction as well as the emotional and psychological factors. This approach not only addresses the immediate challenges of withdrawal and cravings but also supports our clients’ long-term goals for recovery and self-sufficiency, ensuring they have the resources and resilience to reclaim the life they deserve.

Alumni Support

Addiction recovery is a lifelong journey, and having a discharge plan ready is essential. We offer aftercare and alumni support to our clients, providing them with ongoing support and guidance. Rather than simply releasing clients to “figure it out”, we’re proud to offer ongoing therapies, Alumni Homes, and other resources to help clients achieve lasting sobriety.

While clients staying in our Sober Living homes during rehab receive the much-needed accountability and regimented schedule that is crucial in the early stages of sobriety, our Alumni Homes are made available to men and women who want to build on their success from primary addiction care. In our Alumni Homes, clients pay rent, buy their own groceries, cook their own food, and do their own laundry — all while enjoying the continued benefits of living with a house manager and peers with shared experiences, outside the context of treatment.

    Alcohol & Drug Addiction:
    More Than A Physical Disease

Whether you’re suffering from drug addiction or alcoholism, any type of long-term substance abuse can take a toll on your body, making you feel drained, weak, and exhausted, but addiction does not only affect your physical well-being, it affects your overall mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, too.

Drug and alcohol addiction can make you feel lonely, broken, and disconnected from the real world around you. It can cloud your judgment, put a heavy strain on your most important relationships, and cause your spirit to lose hope.

At Roots Recovery, we leverage a holistic healing philosophy that focuses on reconnecting your mind with your body while increasing your feeling of emotional wellness and helping you find your spirituality and purpose in life.
