Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol has become normalized in our society and is both legal and widely consumed. However, regular consumption can lead to alcohol addiction, known as alcoholism or alcohol use disorder (AUD), which is defined as an impaired ability to stop consuming alcohol despite adverse social, financial, and health consequences.

Opioid Abuse

Opioids are a group of drugs synthesized from the opium poppy and used to relieve pain or even produce feelings of pleasure. While they can be legally prescribed by doctors to relieve severe pain from surgery or injuries, habitual use of opioids can lead to physical dependence in as little as a month and can have serious side effects.

Benzodiazepine Abuse

Benzodiazepines are a class of tranquilizers which act as a depressant for the nervous system, producing sedation and muscle relaxation. While they’re often prescribed to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures, they can become addictive if not used as directed, and lead to a sedative use disorder.

Heroin Abuse

Like other opioids, heroin binds to the receptors in the “reward center” of the brain to produce feelings of pleasure, relaxation, and sedation. However, heroin is illegal because it is even more potent and addictive than most opioids, and the different methods of heroin use can cause lasting damage to the body and mind.

Methamphetamine Abuse

Methamphetamine is a stimulant that triggers a rush of dopamine in the brain, leading to feelings of euphoria. It’s an illegal and highly addictive substance that is far more potent than its prescription counterpart, amphetamine, and its use can lead to serious long-term damage to a person’s mental and physical health.

Cocaine Abuse

Cocaine is extracted from the coca plant and is an illegal and highly addictive stimulant that causes a person to feel alert and excited. Like opioids, it triggers a rush of dopamine, but this high quickly dissipates and leaves the user wanting more, which can lead to addiction and begin to affect all aspects of a person’s life.

Other Controlled Substances Abuse

Several other substances are less discussed but just as dangerous as those above. These substances include sedatives, barbiturates, sleeping pills; marijuana, CBD, and synthetic cannabinoids; hallucinogens and ecstasy; inhalants and whippets; “traditional” medicines like kratom, ayahuasca, and peyote; and even certain over the counter medicines that can become addictive if not used as directed.
